  The Kazan art school

Pages: 1 2
The Kazan art school was established in 1895. The graduates of the Art Academy - N.N. Belkovich, Kh.N. Skornyakov, G. A. Medvedev, Yu. I. Tissen and A. I. Denisov were the initiators of its establishment.
Democratic principles of the schoolwork, breadth of curriculum, interesting methods of teaching, highly qualified teaching staff - all these contributed to the school's authority and attract young people of the entire Volga-Kama region. There were 4 departments in the school: painting, engraving, architecture and sculpture. The department of painting, existing from the moment of the school establishment, was the most popular. When in 1908 the new generation of the artists-teachers, the graduates of the Kazan art school N.I. Feshin and P.P. Benkov appeared in the school, creative potential raised rapidly. The department of engraving (1896) was under the leadership of Yu. I. Tissen, who introduced the strict academic method of teaching the art of engraving.
Not only the department of architecture, opened in 1897, but the whole school owes a lot to its founder and teacher K.L. Mufke. He was one of the initiators of construction a special school building and realized his project. The school received the building, which became one of the best school buildings of the city. The department of sculpture establishment became possible only after the school moved to the new building. The schoolteachers P.V. Dzyubanov and V.S. Bogatyrev became the first creatively working sculptors, and the art of sculpture became an essential part of the artistic life of the city.
However, apart from solving professional problems, the school created that special atmosphere, which turned it into the real center of artistic culture of Kazan and the whole Volga region. The school was the center of exhibition activity, had rich museum collection and library, organized cultural and educational arrangements. The school activity not only satisfied the region requirements for artists but also represented purposes of the Academy of Arts concerning the aims and problems of specialized secondary educational establishment. The school itself served the example for creation and reorganizing some of provincial art schools.
Overall reform of the art education
Overall reform of the art education, which had begun in 1917, changed the fate of the Kazan school. It was transformed into Kazan State Free Art studios. During the 1920s reorganizations followed one another (the system of free studios, art and technical, art and architectural high school, secondary school), in 1935 the Art school, existing until now, was established. Numerous reorganizations resulted in loosing its building.
In the years of the Great Patriotic War, despite difficult conditions, the school continued working. During several decades the school graduated many generations of talented artists.
Some of them are especially famous: P.I. Kotov, B.I. Urmanche, F.A. Modorov, Kh.A. Yakupov, L.A.Fattakhov, N.D. Kusnetsov, V.K. Timofeyev, B.M. Ayatatenov, A.M. Rodionov, N.I. Kudelkin, A.A. Abzgildin. Leading teachers of the first post-war decade G.A. Melentiyev, E.A. Zuyev, R.A. Tukhvatullin, B.Ya. Mayorov trained tens of artists - masters of painting and drawing. Today these artists constitute the core of the Artists Union of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Kazan Art School today The Kazan art school provides the high level of artistic education. Many of its graduates enter high art schools of Moscow and St. Petersburg. In spring 2001 the republic contest 'Art Against Drugs ' was held on the base of the art school.
